Help us replace ‘Stan’ our Help at Home van 2017-05-22T11:02:13+00:00

Our Help at Home team wouldn’t be able to get out and about to help local people with gardening, decorating and odd jobs without our trusty Help at Home vans. By day, you can see them driving around the District:

  • taking our equipment,  staff and volunteers to job
  • taking  garden waste and household items to the tip
  • moving small items of furniture for clients

One of our vans ‘Stan’ is 14 years old and is getting a little worn around the edges and is now in need of replacing. It’s no longer fit for purpose because:

  • It’s not large enough. Our short wheel base van cannot accommodate some larger items of furniture and also requires the team to do multiple tip runs when taking garden waste to the tip at the end of jobs
  • It costs more each year to repair and maintain
  • It is a converted minibus which means it has open windows on the side. This presents security risks as tools are on display. As a result, the team have to hang dust sheets over the windows to deter theft.
  • The interior (seats, gearstick, door seals) are all heavily worn

We are now fundraising to replace our ‘Stan’ the van with a second hand, long wheel base van which will cost around £13,500.  This will provide the following benefits:

  • Lower replacement part costs
  • Increased fuel efficiency  resulting in lower costs
  • Ability to transport more items in one go to the tip, resulting in less wasted staff  time, lower fuel costs and less wear and tear on the van. For example, if doing multiple tip runs from a Knaresborough based job, this significantly increases our costs and time to complete a job.
  • Saved time – no longer any need to empty the van of tools to make way for taking items to the tip
  • Added security – no tools on display
  • Improved safety for staff – some larger items, such as mattresses, have to be squeezed into the van, which involves a large amount of moving and handling of heavy items to make them fit into the small space
  • Better branding on the exterior of the van so that those in need can get in touch

This will enable us to help more clients with the practical work they need to help them remain living independently within their own homes. Please help in any way you can by donating here https://mydonate.bt.com/charities/harrogateeasierlivingprojecthelp
